From the Editor's Desk: Do you feel the Tiger Spirit?

Between Tiger Spirit Day, TigerTHON, Tony's Tribe at the men's lacrosse game, and Student Appreciation Day at the men's basketball game, this weekend was a big one for tigers and spirit. But did it work? Do you feel more spirited? (And does anyone else think we're overusing the word Tiger?)

Hot off the heels of Tiger Pride Day on Wednesday, the Student Government Association hosted Tiger Spirit Day in the University Union on Thursday. I enjoyed the free food, candy and T-shirts, but I'm not sure how giveaways help promote genuine school spirit. The cotton candy and popcorn tasted good, but it melted in my mouth immediately. How do enticements like free food and player autographs create a lasting positive impression about Towson?

(To be fair, I hear the afternoon pep rally in Paws was pretty popular. And I'm always a fan of karaoke.)

Friday and Saturday's TigerTHON, a 16-hour dance marathon in the University Union, had a more tangible outcome. Attendees raised about $7,000 for Johns Hopkins, and they had a lot of fun along the way. At 3 a.m., when every sane person on campus was fast asleep, dozens of dancers were doing the booty call. Now THAT'S how to build spirit!

But I wish the organizers had done more to invite and include the full student body in the event. To make the event a true campus tradition, it'll have to keep growing in size and stature.

Get your Facebook T-shirt

On Thursday, I mentioned a funny T-shirt that mentioned the popular networking site Facebook. It turns out that I mis-read the shirt: It didn't say "I'm hotter on Facebook," it said "You looked hotter on Facebook."

It also turns out that the T-shirt wasn't a joke: It's the foundation of a company.

Zach Siskind, a freshman business major, says he has copyrighted the phrase and printed up a batch of T-shirts in five colors. After reading this column on Thursday, he called up to explain the business plan.

Siskind's dad owns a T-shirt shop in Pennsylvania, and "one night he asked me what I was doing with my life," he recalls.

He thought to himself: "I'm not even 20, I don't know what I'm doing." And then, as he stared at his computer monitor, the slogan popped into his head.

The first T-shirts came in last week. "I just put in another order for another 150 shirts today," Siskind said on Friday.

He has ambitious plans for the company, including a line of MySpace-themed shirts. To order a "hotter on Facebook" T-shirt, e-mail zacharia11@aol.com.
