This August, Towson will have 400 additional freshmen compared to last fall, according to registrar and associate vice president for academic affairs Bob Giordani.
"So I multiply that by five courses each, so that's about 2,000 seats," he said. Some transfer students will need general education classes, too, for a total anticipated need of 3,000 additional seats compared to last fall. The challenge is spreading out the courses correctly.
"I know we need 3,000 seats, but obviously we don't want 3,000 seats of Arabic 101. It has to be spread out," Giordani said.
For example, the art department offered five sections of ART 107 last fall. Next fall, it plans to offer six sections. Slight, but significant, changes like that are happening in departments across campus. The University has scheduled about 2,850 sections of general education classes for the fall, up from about 2,500 last fall.
"My guess is we're going to be adding between another 50 and 100 sections in the coming weeks," Giordani said.
English 102, Biology 110, and Psychology 101 are traditionally three of the most popular general education classes. Towson has scheduled about 95 sections of Writing for a Liberal Education next fall, for a total of 1,900 seats.
Other popular general education categories include math, history, and modern languages.
