Shohreh Kaynama, whose contract as dean of the College of Business and Economics was set to expire this year, has been named permanent dean, Provost James Brennan said today.

"A lot of good things are happening both at TU and in CBE," Kaynama said, "and I would like to be part of the team. It's an exciting time."

Kaynama signed a three-year contract in January 2003. Last April, she submitted a letter of resignation, then changed her mind and decided to finish her term.

Brennan formed a CBE dean search committee last fall.

"The Search Committee, under the leadership of Dean Gerald Intemann of the [Fisher College of Science and Mathematics], reviewed the credentials of a total of 41 applicants. Six were pursued further for references. Three finalists were interviewed during campus visits," Brennan said in the announcement.

Kaynama was one of the three. After meeting with the search committee on March 13, Brennan spoke with President Robert Caret and the two men agreed to offer the position to her.

"Now her position as dean is the same as all the other deans," Brennan said in an interview.

All deans serve at the pleasure of the president. They are formally evaluated every five years.

"The search has really affirmed her and given her-an informal vote of confidence in her leadership," Brennan said. "I think she's done a good job."

In her three years as dean, Kaynama has helped bring the highly sought-after Masters in Business Administration degree to Towson. The MBA program will begin enrolling students in the fall. Kaynama also established the Center for Applied Business Economic Research and developed The Associate competition.

Business school deans straddle the academic and business worlds, and Kaynama is no exception. "We have established our position in the business community," she said. "It's about time for us to harvest that."

Kaynama's resume describes her dean responsibilities this way: "Establishing vision and strategic direction for the college; working with the faculty and staff in matters related to programs and curriculum; managing the budget; maintenance of College AACSB accreditation status in both of its programs (business and accounting); and developing and fostering external relations with the business community, alumni and other constituents of the college locally and beyond."

Kaynama graduated from Towson with a marketing degree in 1976. She earned an MBA from the University of Baltimore in 1978. She joined TU's department of marketing in 1984 and worked her way up to the position of interim dean in 2002.

"She's a very personable, very warm individual who literally can work a room, and she's made great contacts on the outside," Brennan said.

Kaynama is "phenomenal" with students, he added.

Five years from now, Kaynama expects CBE to be part of the "economic and societal development of the region," even more than it is now.

"It will be a very strong undergraduate as well as a very strong, unique grad institution that is quality-oriented and strives for excellence," she said.
