From the Editor's Desk: Donors brave rain for an arty 'Affair'

A line of thunderstorms passed across Towson just in time for the start of "A Funky Formal Affair" in the Center for the Arts on Saturday night. The coat check did a brisk business in soaking wet umbrellas and drenched trenchcoats.

At least three other local organizations were targeting donors the same night as Towson.

The Greater Maryland Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association sponsored "Memory Ball 2006," the University of Maryland Shock Trauma unit hosted "A Night of Heroes," and St. Joseph Medical Center created "An Island Paradise" to benefit a new hospital unit.

Still, more than 300 guests supported Towson University's recently renovated CFA, sipping wine and exploring galleries until midnight.

The food stations and four open bars were a definite draw. Kit Spicer, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication, corralled attendees into the concert hall with a personal plea: "I haven't had a drink yet because I have to make a speech. The sooner we get this done, the sooner I can drink!"

Organizers weren't shy about encouraging bids and donations. Referring to his Hugh Hefner-inspired gold-hued jacket, Spicer joked: "You can bid on this coat if you want to! Everything's for sale."

Spicer wasn't the only funky friend of the arts in the crowd. Some women wore black, white, and rainbow feather boas. Some men wore yellow, green, and purple bowties.

President Robert Caret went sans tie for the evening.

"I was trying to figure out how to be presidential and funky at the same time," Caret joked during the performance portion of the evening. "I decided I was going to wear a tux, bare-chested, wearing the medallion that is infamous on this campus- But as I was wearing it around the house today I decided it was just a little too funky."

Surveying Towson's student involvement

According to the most recent available data from the National Survey of Student Engagement, more than half of Towson seniors don't participate in any co-curricular activities, and almost half have never attended an art exhibit, gallery, play, dance, or theater performance during their college years.

The division of student affairs wants to figure out why, so it is asking full-time undergrads to participate in the College Student Survey.

The survey is instrument to "help the University better understand the student experience at TU, especially in terms of students who are involved and what may be some of the barriers to involvement on campus," assistant vice president for campus life Teri Hall said.

Have you seen TheTowerlight.com lately?

Within the pages of The Towerlight's print edition, we only have a certain amount of space for photographs of Towson University news and events. For example, page 12 of today's Towerlight includes six photos of Greek Week, and pages 16 and 17 include several photos of the Funky Formal gala.

But we always take many more photos than we have room for. Recently, we have started to publish a variety of photo galleries on TheTowerlight.com, with the dozens of photos that we can't fit in print.

Check out the Web site today for photo essays of "A Funky Formal Affair," Greek Week, Greek Sing, and last Thursday's accident on Cross Campus Drive.
