Carol Vellucci, the director of Towson University's Career Center, will become President Robert Caret's communications assistant, Caret announced Wednesday.

Vellucci will move across Cross Campus Drive from 7800 York Road to an office on the third floor of the Administration Building in May.

Vellucci replaces spokesperson Susanna Craine, who left the University in November. Craine was director of community relations; Starting May 3, Vellucci will be assistant to the president for communications.

Caret said the position will fulfill four primary responsibilities: A spokesperson "when appropriate;" a writer and editor for the president's office, including "letters, speeches, Powerpoint presentations;" a coordinator with the marketing arm of the campus, "to ensure that we are getting the kind of media coverage and the message we want out there;" and a facilitator for community relations.

"As we met with her, she really did sell herself as the right person," Caret said. "She knows the campus very, very well... She has the personality and drive to do the things I outlined in the job description."

Vellucci will essentially serve as Caret's point person for public relations. Her background includes a variety of experiences in business and higher education, Caret's announcement noted.

"I've straddled both sides of the fence," Vellucci said.

She used to work at the Baltimore Business Journal as director of marketing and also served as director of external The search process took several months. The committee reviewed over 100 applications. Caret said it was not an easy selection process.

"After we went through the interviews, we initially zeroed in on three, then narrowed it down to two. Then some new ones came in, so we looked at them, then came back to two," Caret said. The search was a "learning process," he said, because administrators spent time thinking about what responsibilities the job should entail.

The appointment fills the final gap in Caret's staff, which has suffered several losses this school year. Caret also recently hired a new vice president for administration and finance and a new athletic director.

Vice President for Student Affairs Deb Moriarty said Vellucci has worked hard to make the Career Center a professional resource.

"She's moved it really far from where it was a couple years ago and is leaving it in good shape," she said.

Moriarty said the division of student affairs will search for a new career center director in the coming months.
