Towson University has received a technology gift worth at least $250,000 for its security and information assurance computer laboratory.

A grant from Internet Security Systems includes a full suite of information security software that students can practice with and experiment on.

"Our information assurance lab is one of the best you will find anywhere," vice president for economic and community outreach James Clements said. "This gift of software from ISS will put some of the latest software tools in the hands of our students. These are the tools that are in demand when our students graduate."

ISS, one of the largest information security companies in the world, is providing its Proventia Enterprise Security Platform for use by Towson students.

Thanks to the gift, students will be able to experience technology that is in use in the real world. "Towson and its academic partners are cultivating the information assurance experts of tomorrow and driving cutting edge research," Tom Noonan, ISS president and CEO, said in a press release. "Our goal is to be an integral part of helping accelerate the development and deployment of information assurance technology in Maryland by providing the most advanced technology and curricula available."

Clements said Towson is a recognized leader in information security.

"Last year we became one of only 12 universities in the country to map our curriculum to the federal guidelines," he said.

Also, TU is a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Security and Assurance Education.

Towson has also arranged for other schools in the Maryland Alliance for Information Security & Assurance to benefit from the gift, Clements added.

MAISA is a partnership between 11 schools that is based in Towson.

As part of the grant, Towson "will conduct information assurance research and share the results with Maryland firms, particularly those that develop information assurance products or services," the University announced. The knowledge will also be shared with government agencies and other institutions.
