Pending David Harnage’s retirement in late June, the search for a new vice president for administration and finance and chief fiscal officer is underway.

The University recently published a job listing and announced the formation of a Search Advisory Committee ahead of Harnage's retirement on June 30.

President Robert Caret plans to appoint an interim vice president sometime in June. He hopes the permanent VP will take office in early fall.

Ted Zaleski, executive assistant to the president, said the search committee will begin meeting in mid-June to review applications.

"We're starting to get some in, but I think it'll be a couple of weeks before we start getting some serious numbers," he said.

According to the job listing, the ideal candidate will possess a strong record of administrative experience and leadership skills along with a "creative, motivating and decisive" leadership style.

"A proven record of several years of broad senior-level responsibility with emphasis on budget fiscal planning, capital planning, support services and information technology is required," the description said.

When asked what qualifications the committee would look for in a candidate, Zaleski replied quickly: "David Harnage."

"That's the truth, it really is...[We're looking for] somebody who not only knows the money side, but somebody who understands facilities and buildings and IT and police and auxiliary services and all those other things. It's really a broad-based position," he said.

In addition to Zaleski, the committee members are: Michael Anselmi, University counsel; Kent Barnes, chair of the department of geography and environmental planning; James Brennan, Provost; James Clements, vice president for economic and community outreach; Charlotte Exner, dean of the College of Health Professions; Gloria Holland, director of technology support services; Raymond Lorion, dean of the College of Education; Joe Oster, associate vice president for auxiliary services; Phil Ross, associate vice president for human resources; and Steve Showers, associate vice president for facilities management.

Harnage is leaving Towson after three-and-a-half years as a senior vice president.

"If I were staying in higher education, there is no other University I would rather be at," he said last month. He will be retiring to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
