Towson University President Robert Caret has appointed former College of Business and Economics dean Alan Leberknight to the position of interim vice president for administration and finance and chief fiscal officer.

Leberknight will begin to manage the administrative division when current CFO David Harnage retires on July 1.

"An experienced administrator, Mr. Leberknight brings over 30 years of education and business experience to the position. He holds an MBA from Loyola, Baltimore," Caret said in an e-mail to faculty and staff on Tuesday.

Leberknight will serve in the position until a permanent vice president is selected. Executive assistant to the president Ted Zaleski, chair of the search advisory committee, said the new VP will likely take over sometime in the fall.

Leberknight was the CBE dean from April 1995 to July 2001. He brings significant business experience to the position: He has served as president of the Bank of Baltimore, executive vice president of Signet Bank and president and CEO of Port Discovery.

"Leberknight has been a member of the Baltimore County Executive's Advisory Board on Higher Education for the past 10 years and is a member of the County Executive's Special Task Force for Partnerships, among four year institutions, community colleges and Baltimore County Public Schools," Caret's e-mail said. "He was a member of the Baltimore County Board of Education and served as the board president, and served two terms as a member of the Baltimore City Fund for Educational Excellence."

Harnage announced his intentions to retire in April. The search committee was formed last month. He has called the decision to retire from higher education "one of the most difficult decisions I've ever made in my life."

The University is planning a reception to honor Harnage next week. It will take place on Thursday, June 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Minnegan Room of Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Tickets are required. They are available by contacting Amie Voith at avoith@towson.edu or 410-704-2151.
