Construction continued on the Center for the Arts over the weekend as workers prepared for Monday's classes. A new staircase was completed outside the new entrance on Cross Campus Drive just in time for the fall semester.

Local newspapers and television networks were invited on a media hard hat tour of the construction in mid-July.

The University promoted its "canter livered new art gallery, the soaring ceiling and skylights and multiple balconies that wrap the interior in the open design of the building."

Above from left, workers install fixtures in the student commons; a Caterpillar sits outside Cross Campus Drive; and designer Doug Feith explains how architects created a "yellow brick road" to guide students through the building.

Right, a worker installs a door on the second floor of the building; bottom left, a construction crew prepares a new entrance; and bottom right, staffers clean the second floor.

The $53 million addition and renovation is nearing completion. The University will celebrate its progress at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Governor Robert L. Ehrlich and University System of Maryland chancellor William Kirwan are expected to attend. Another formal unveiling will take place in the spring.
