A two-track series of workshops will challenge students to emerge and progress as leaders at Towson this fall.
The Office of Student Activities will sponsor L.E.A.D. TU, a program dedicated to “defining the leader within.” Rachel Repp, the coordinator for leadership development and community service, said she hopes to engage students in leadership development opportunities throughout the year.
The workshop series includes two tracks: an emerging leader track for freshmen and sophomores, and a progressing leaders track for juniors and seniors.
The workshops will take place each Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., beginning Sept. 15. Students who attend every workshop in their track will receive a leadership certificate.
The emerging track will focus on basic leadership skill sets with workshops on leadership styles, ethical decision-making and professional/career development. The progressing track will discuss philosophical concepts and applications with workshops on influence, people/priorities and vision/self-discipline.
Repp said she believes many students sense special leadership qualities inside them.
“I believe that all students have potential to be a leader,” she said.
“That doesn’t mean we’ll all be president, but it means that we all have the ability inside us to influence, lead people in a positive direction, and make change happen at Towson.”
The idea of a workshop series is a personal one for Repp.
“When I was in college, I participated in many workshop series – I loved them,” she said. “It was just something that was in my blood.”
Students interested in the workshops are encouraged to sign up in advance.
The program also includes a mentoring component, which partners interested students with Towson faculty and staff members.
Repp is also planning a men’s leadership summit in October. A similar event for women is held annually, but this is the first time one will be held for men.
“There’s a real lack of strong male leadership training, so this is the beginning of something like that,” Repp said.
