Separate commencement ceremonies will be held for undergraduate and graduate students in January, University officials clarified this week.
Rita Ckyyou, program management specialist for the graduation office, said rumors of a cancelled ceremony are erroneous.
“We have no idea where that information came from,” she said.
Over 1,000 students graduate after the fall semester, according to William Reuling, assistant to the provost.
“That’s a lot of students to say, ‘We’re not going to have a ceremony for you,’” Reuling said.
The undergraduate ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 9 at the Towson Center. The graduate ceremony will be held later that day, at a time to be determined. The graduation planning committee met yesterday to begin planning the “nuts and bolts.”
Last January, two ceremonies were held for students, split by the college their degree was in.
Due to the increased number of students expected to attend the ceremony – about 900, compared to between 400 and 500 last year – each graduate will receive four tickets, down from six last year.
Students will walk across the stage as their names are read by faculty members, despite rumors to the contrary.
January commencements may not continue, though.
“There’s been no decision made about not having mid-year commencements in the future,” Reuling said.
The University has considered combining the ceremonies into one in May, to save money and time. Reuling noted most schools nationwide do not have mid-year commencements.
The commencement Web site, www.towson.edu/commencement/, provides specifics for the January ceremony.
Students who plan to graduate in May 2005 must declare their intention by Sept. 30. The Enrollment Services Web site, onestop.towson.edu, has instructions.
