Speech: MCR: April 2002
EXCERPTS
MCR Election

Good morning. My name is Brian Stelter. I am a junior at Damascus High School and am running for MCR secretary. There was a time when I did not know what MCR meant. The SGA at my school was not involved in the organization and I had never heard of it. I did wonder -- does SGA go beyond my school? And I finally found out. At MLW, I learned what MCR, and MASC, and all of these acronyms meant. Our new school leadership joined MCR and attended the meetings and it interested me. I am positive that I am not the only student that at one time did not know what MCR meant. A student who would like to be more involved but does not know how to go about it. And I'd like to help fix that.

I have had the opportunity to serve on the local, county, and state levels. I serve as the News Editor of our school newspaper, I attend SGA, SIT, PTSA meetings, and serve my community frequently. I have been to numerous MCR meetings this year, and was in Annapolis to lobby on behalf of SMOB voting rights. I attended MASC Lobbying Day, was at the Ocean City convention last week, and have attended several leadership conferences. I am at present the only student member of the Professional Growth System Steering Committee for Administrators and I am involved with other committees, as well.

I'd like to see more interaction among schools, more communication. Next year you can expect meeting minutes to be available the day after any meeting, on the MCR web site, on first class, etc. I will strive to assure that every school is an active member of MCR. I will strive to include every student who aspires to become involved with MCR and other related opportunities.
