MEDIA ADVISORY:
High school students donate refurbished van to paralyzed teacher

Where: Damascus High School: 25921 Ridge Road, Damascus MD
When: Thursday, March 13th: 9:30 to 10am
Who: Mr. Bob Dickie; DHS students; local dignitaries; Auto Trades Foundation

Students from Damascus High School will donate a refurbished van to paralyzed teacher Mr. Bob Dickie on Thursday, March 13th.

Mr. Dickie, a popular History teacher, was partially paralyzed at the end of September when he went rock-climbing with two DHS students. Months of recovery and rehabilitation have ensued, and this wheelchair-accessible van will enhance his ability to travel to and from rehabilitation sessions.

Many of Dickie's students will be on hand for the ceremony. It will take place outside Damascus High School, and will be broadcast live to students via closed-circuit television. Students in the Montgomery County Auto Trades Foundation program at Damascus and Thomas Edison High Schools prepared the van and made it handicap-accessible.

Thomas Edison Auto Technology students revamped the van, while Damascus students handled details, preparation work, and final inspection. The Montgomery County Auto Trades Foundation oversees the county's auto technology education program.

Mr. Dickie believes that the two students' heroic efforts helped save his life. He hopes to return to teaching, possibly at the start of next school year. His description of the painful ordeal -- and the outpouring of support from friends and the community -- is heartening.

This is not the first occasion Damascus students have worked together to support Mr. Dickie. Just in time for Thanksgiving, the Student Government Association and the Events Planning class joined forces to raise more than $6,000 in the “Dollars for Dickie” campaign.

The Foundation's Board of Directors will meet at Damascus High School at 8am on March 13th, before participating in the donation event. School system representatives and other local dignitaries have been invited to the ceremony, as well.

Platforms for television cameras will be available.

Among the representatives available for interviews:
Mr. Bob Dickie, History teacher
Mr. Robert Domergue, Damascus High School principal
Montgomery County Auto Trades Foundation representatives
Damascus High School students
